Learning to read and write – methods from Germany:
In a time frame with over 7000 years the human language has been developing in a dynamic progress. In school children usually learn to read and write within one to two years. In case of a slower more difficult way of learning to read and write, it will be seen as a danger for good educational development. If you look at it the historical way, the spoken language has the priority compared to the written. The letters derived from the phonetic alphabet and sounds. In preschool the children learn to hear and listen to spoken words get an awareness of language.
Nowadays building up vocabulary, syntax, ability to listen and understanding, graphomotoric competences and generally language skills are being treated equal in our school education. The very different learning initial situation requires individual learning options, especially in inclusive groups, with child friendly learning methods. Exemplary we refer to Theresa Brunner’s article „ Whales – a big theme“. This motivating theme is very useful for boys and girls working with the initial sounds.
The children gather in their learning groups bringing their initial sound cards, glass stones and picture cards. Each child turns a card and names the animal on the card (camel, duck, scorpio etc. all literally words), then it marks the beginning and end with a glass stone. By clapping they split each word into syllables.
After this group lesson the children go on working individual with partners. They get cards with a word on one side and a picture on the other. One reads the word and spells this word. The partner writes the word down, checking with the card for correct spelling. Then they change rolls. By hearing and writing literally words the children also experience social competences.
The next step would take the children to a phase in which they can try out what they have experienced. A teacher shows cards with words like WATER-GREY- FIN-JUMP- LARGE. The children guess the animal and talk about their new knowledge. It is very important for the children to activate their inner lexicon and speak it out loud. To activate the known words is basically important fort he process of reading and writing. In one reading phase pupils can use three different reading texts ( text with capital letters, text in short sentences, text for practiced readers). On each text you can find pictures of different whales. Each pupil can now contribute its new acquired knowledge to each picture in a self-made whale book with the title „ The best of a whale“. Some write in whole sentences, others perhaps only use single words, in either way you can clearly see the individual success in learning.
